GOD’S GREATEST MASTERPIECE

Shalom,

Percayakah kita bahwa alam semesta dan segala isinya adalah karya agung Allah tetapi gereja Tuhan merupakan karya teragung/terbesar-Nya mengatasi segala ciptaan lainnya (bnd. Mzm. 8:2,4-7; Kol. 1:12-19; Ams. 8:22-31; Ef. 1:4)? Efesus 2:10 menegaskan, “Karena kita ini buatan (poiema = workmanship = karya seni, pekerjaan tangan) Allahdiciptakan dalam Kristus Yesus untuk melakukan pekerjaan baik (agathos = baik dan dapat dinikmati orang lain) yang dipersiapkan Allah sebelumnya. Ia mau supaya kita hidup di dalamnya.”  

Do we believe that the universe and all the creation in it are the great works of God, but the church of God is His Masterpiece exceeding His other creations (cf./see Psalm 8:2:4-7; Colossians 1 : 12-19; Proverbs 8:22-31; Ephesians 1:4) ? Ephesians 2:10 proclaims, “ For we are his workmanship (poiema = work of art, handcraft) created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Siapa yang dimaksud dengan gereja Tuhan dan apa latar belakangnya?

Manusia sudah mati setelah jatuh dalam dosa sehingga gaya hidup dan pola pikirnya semata-mata mencintai dunia dan apa yang ada di dalamnya – keinginan daging, keinginan mata serta keangkuhan hidup (1 Yoh. 2:15-16).

Who is the church of God and what is its background?

Man who died in sins has a worldly lifestyle and mindset, loving the world and its elements – lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life (1 John 2 :15 – 16).

Apa ciri-ciri manusia yang mati (rohani)?

-     Hidup dalam pelanggaran dan dosa (Rm. 3:10,23).

-     Mengikuti jalan dunia ini (1 Yoh. 2:15-16).

-     Menaati penguasa kerajaan angkasa yaitu Roh yang sedang bekerja di antara orang durhaka (Ef. 2:2).

The characteristics of a spiritually dead person :

·         Comitting transgressions and sins (Romans 3:10,23)

·         Following / Walking down the path of this world ( 1 John 2:15-16)

·         Following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience (Ephesians 2:2)

Dosa menyerang siapa pun tak terkecuali para rasul juga berlatar belakang sama yaitu hidup menuruti kehendak daging dan pikiran jahat (Ef. 2:3).

Sin attacks anyone including the Apostles who lived their lives following the lust of the flesh and the deceit of mind (Ephesians 2:3)

Apakah Allah tinggal diam membiarkan manusia berdosa hidup di bawah ancaman hukuman mati kekal? Sama sekali tidak! Apa yang diperbuat-Nya? Ia berkarya dengan:

Does God stay silent and let man live in sin under eternal condemnation? Surely / Absolutely not! But what does He do?  This is what He does :

·      Menghidupkan/membangkitkan gereja di dalam Kristus Yesus (Ef. 2:6^a) oleh sebab rahmat dan kasih-Nya yang besar (Ef. 2:4).

·      Reviving / resurrecting the church in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6a) because of His great love and mercy (Ephesians 2:4).

Bagaimana cara menghidupkan gereja Tuhan yang mati dalam dosa? Dengan memberikan pengampunan dari segala dosa dan kejahatan (Kol. 2:13-14).

How does God revive a church dead in sin? By forgiving their sins and wickedness (Colossians 2:13-14).

Setelah dibangkitkan/dihidupkan bersama Kristus, gereja tidak lagi menetap di ‘kuburan’ tetapi dipindahkan ke dalam kerajaan Anak-Nya (Kol. 1:13) dan diberi kemampuan untuk menjalani hidup baru (Rm. 6:4,6,11; 8:1-3,9-11). Ilustrasi: orang mati lama-lama akan mengeluarkan bau tidak sedap dan berulat membuat ketidaknyamanan bagi orang-orang di sekitarnya sehingga harus dikuburkan. Gereja Tuhan adalah satu tubuh dengan banyak anggota (1 Kor. 12:12); bila salah satu anggota tubuh (rohani) mati/bermasalah, anggota-anggota lain akan terganggu gerak aktivitasnya namun tidak akan membiarkan anggota yang ‘sakit’ tersebut tetapi berusaha ‘menyehatkannya’. Gereja Tuhan tidak boleh ada yang mati rohani karena semua telah dihidupkan oleh Allah. ‘Kehebohan’ terjadi jika ada anggota Tubuh Kristus yang mati (rohani)!

Right after being resurrected along with Christ, the church is no longer in the grave but was transferred to the kingdom of His Son ( Colossians 1:13) and given the ability to live a new life ( Romans 6: 4,6,11; 8:1-3, 9-11).  As an illustration, a corpse gradually gives off bad odor and gets rotten, making people feel uncomfortable.That’s why it needs a burial. The Church of God consists of many members (1 Corinthians 12:12). If one of the members is dysfunctional, it will bother other members’ activities, but of course the other members will not let that happen and do their very best to help him ‘recover.’  The church of God is not supposed to be spiritually dead, for God has given us life. There will be a ‘tumult’ if one of the members dies (spiritually)! 

·      Memberikan tempat bagi kita bersama-sama dengan Dia di Surga (Ef. 2:6^b) dibuktikan Yesus kembali ke rumah Bapa untuk menyediakan tempat bagi kita (Yoh. 14:2). Dengan kata lain, kita menjadi ahli waris, anggota-anggota tubuh dan peserta dalam janji yang diberikan di dalam Kristus Yesus (Ef. 3:2-6; Rm. 11:13,17,22).

·      Giving us a place to be with Him in heaven (Ephesians 2:6b). And it was proven when Jesus returned to His Father’s house to prepare  for us (John 14:2). In other words, being the members of the body and partakers of His promise in Christ, we become heirs, (Ephesians 3:2-6; Romans 11:13,17,22).

·      Herannya, kita, bangsa kafir, mendapat kemurahan lebih daripada bangsa Israel, bangsa pilihan Tuhan yang tetap dijaga-Nya dan tidak punah meskipun mendapat serangan dari banyak negara. Herannya! Bangsa Israel sampai sekarang masih menantikan Mesias, orang-orang yang tidak mengenal Kristus mencari-cari Jalan lurus sementara gereja Tuhan telah mendapatkannya dan hidup di dalam Dia sehingga gereja Tuhan memiliki masa depan gilang gemilang (Ef. 2:7; bnd. Ef 1:18-22).

Wonderfully / Amazingly, we, the gentiles, have received more grace than the Israelites, God’s chosen people that victoriously survived the attacks by numerous enemies. God is with them. Ironically, they have been waiting for the coming of their Messiah up to this day. They are still looking for the ‘straight path’ while we, the church of God, have found it. Now that we live in Him, a fabulously bright future is awaiting the church of God  (Ephesians 2:7; cf. Ephesians 1:18-22).

Janji ini benar-benar menenangkan gereja Tuhan sehingga apa pun boleh terjadi dalam kehidupan ini tetapi kita tidak perlu takut karena kita sudah mempunyai tempat di Surga. Ilustrasi: jika kita memiliki dua tempat tinggal berbeda (Indonesia dan Amerika) kemudian terjadi kerusuhan di Indonesia, kita tidak perlu takut tetapi langsung terbang ke Amerika dan merasa aman di sana. Terlebih lagi Yesus menyiapkan tempat di Surga bagi kita, kekacauan dan kekejaman boleh terjadi di mana-mana namun batin serta pikiran kita tenang dan aman sebab kita telah memiliki tempat pengungsian kekal di Surga.

These promises truly bring peace to the life of the church of God. Whatever happens in this world, we should not be dismayed for we have a place in Heaven. Like when we have two residences, let’s say, one in Indonesia and another in the USA. If something bad happens in Indonesia, for example, we will take it easy, because we have another place to flee to (in the USA). Jesus prepares our homes in heaven. Riot and calamity may break out anywhere and anytime, but we will not panic since we have our eternal refuge in haven.

·      Karena kita buatan (poiema = workmanship = pekerjaan tangan atau karya seni) Allah, dijamin/digaransi tidak akan ada cacat maupun kesalahan kerja (Ef. 5:26-27). Seandainya ada komplaint/pengaduan, Allah bertanggung jawab untuk memperbaikinya. Gereja adalah karya agung Allah dalam mengekspresikan hikmat-Nya yang tak terbatas juga pola ilahi-Nya (Ef. 1:23; Why. 14:14-15). Gereja dibuat Allah dengan tujuan menyinarkan/menunjukkan seluruh hikmat Allah yang tidak terjangkau oleh pikiran manusia.

For we are God’s creation (Poiema = work of art, handcraft), it is guaranteed that we have no defects (Ephesians 5:26-27). If there is any, it will be God’s responsibility to fix it. The Church is the masterpiece of God that expresses His unlimited wisdom as well as His divine pattern (Ephesians 1:23, Revelation 14:14-15). God created the Church to emit the light of His entire wisdom that goes beyond our comprehension.

·      Gereja diciptakan dalam Kristus Yesus untuk membedakan dengan ciptaan alam semesta beserta isinya. Dengan kata lain, gereja buatan Allah tidak tertandingi oleh ciptaan-ciptaan-Nya yang lain (Yak. 1:18; Maz. 48:1-4; Yoh. 1:12-13; Yes. 2:2). Kita menjadi anak sulung dari semua ciptaan-Nya (Yak. 1:18) dan satu tubuh dengan Kristus sebagai Kepala jemaat (Kol. 1:18).

·      The Church was created in Christ Jesus to distinguish it from other creation -- the universe and everything in                       it. In other words, the Church surpasses His other creations (James 1:18; Psalm 48:1-4; John 1:12-13; Isaiah 2:2). We are the firstborns of all of His creations (James 1:18) and belong to one body with Christ as the Head of the Church.

Yang perlu diperhatikan, anggota /gereja Tubuh Kristus dengan latar belakang beda-beda – budaya, pendidikan, kesejahteraan sosial, dst. – harus diantisipasi untuk menghindari terjadinya kekacauan agar dapat mengekspresikan hikmat Allah. Ilustrasi: bila kita menderita sakit maag, kita sudah harus mengantisipasi dengan pola makan teratur juga mengonsumsi obat agar penyakit itu tidak kambuh. Jangan mudah menyalahkan orang lain bila penyakit maag kita kambuh sebab yang bermasalah adalah kita sendiri yang tidak becus mengelola kesehatan tubuh. Jangan pula gampang berputus asa dengan kelemahan yang kita miliki! Demikian pula dalam berjemaah, untuk menghindari keributan, masing-masing dari kita harus mengelola dengan baik perbedaan cara berpikir, cara berkomunikasi dll. agar solid dalam kesatuan tubuh untuk dapat menampilkan Pribadi Yesus, Kepala gereja.

The body of Christ comprises members with different backgrounds in terms of culture, education, social welfare, and so on. These issues must be managed well to avoid chaos so that the wisdom of God can be expressed. As an illustration,  if we have the tendency to have gastric pains, we must avoid them by eating regularly or even by taking some medicines to prevent the pains from recurring . We must not blame others if our gastric pains  eventually reoccur because we neglect our health conditions. Somehow, we should not give up hope easily due to our weaknesses. In the same way, each of us should deal with our differences well – the way we think,  communicate, etc. -- to avoid conflicts and to nurture friendship among us. That way, we can keep our unity solid as one body and present Jesus as the Head of the Church.

·      Gereja diciptakan Allah untuk melakukan pekerjaan baik bukan menurut standar manusia yang ditandai dengan kelemahan tetapi kebaikan yang dapat dinikmati oleh orang lain (Rm. 15:1-7; Tit. 2:14).

·      The Church was created by God to do good works -- not by man’s standard with all its shortcomings -- that can be a blessing to others (Romans 15:1; Titus 2: 14).

Kenyataannya, keributan/kekacauan terjadi karena masing-masing merasa berbuat baik. Misal: suami istri ribut karena masing-masing merasa telah berbuat atau bermaksud baik. Demikian pula keributan yang terjadi antargereja dan antarbangsa.

In reality, a dispute arises when each quarelling party claims to be on the right side. When a married couple has a quarell, both husband and wife think they have done the right thing to good purpose. Similarly, churches come into conflict with one another and so do nations across the world.

·      Sesungguhnya gereja melakukan pekerjaan baik yang dipersiapkan Allah sebelumnya (Ef. 1:4,9; 3:9-12; 1 Ptr. 1:12; 1 Kor. 2:7).

·      In fact, the Church is to execute acts of kindness predesigned by God (Ephesians 1:4,9; 3:9-12; 1 Peter 1:12; 1 Corinthians 2:7)

Perlu diketahui Perjanjian Baru dibagi dalam 3 bagian besar:

-     Kitab Sejarah (5 Kitab)  : 4 Injil (Matius, Markus, Lukas, Yohanes) +  Kisah Para Rasul

-     Surat-surat    (21 Kitab)     :  Roma s/d Yudas

-     Eskatologi      (1 Kitab)     : Wahyu.

The New Testament comprises three big / major parts:

-      History  (5 books)              : 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) + Acts

-      Epistles (21 books)     : Romans to Jude

-      Eschatology (1 book)    : Revelation

Melalui Injil, kita mengetahui hidup telah datang sedangkan surat-surat menyatakan bahwa Gereja memiliki hidup.Injil menubuatkan gereja akan dibangun dan terealisasi pada kitab Kisah Para Rasul. Gereja yang sudah terbentuk mengalami banyak dinamika karena kelemahan-kelemahan manusiawi sehingga muncullah surat-surat untuk mendorong gereja merefleksikan hidup yang telah dimilikinyamelalui pertolongan Roh Kudus. Bila bangsa Israel bangga dengan teori/dalil kitab suci (Perjanjian Lama), kitab suci Perjanjian Baru adalah Firman menjadi daging maka orang Kristen bangga berkarakter Kristus.

Through the Gospels, we know that the Life has come, and the Epistles show that the Church has already obtained Life. The Gospels prophesied the consctruction of  the Church and its realization  was recorded in the book of Acts. The constructed Church faced many problems because of human weaknesses. Then the Epistles were written to help the church reflect the Life with the help of the Holy Spirit. While the Israelites are proud of the Old Testament with all the rules or laws in it, the Christians proudly take on the characters of Christ, the living Word that became flesh as proclaimed in the New Testament.

Ingat, betapapun sulit pekerjaan yang kita hadapi karena banyaknya ‘musuh’, Allah berjalan di depan dan berperang untuk kita (Ul. 1:30) sehingga bersama-Nya kita dapat melalui masalah berat tersebut. Jangan salah mengerti dengan berpendapat ‘masalah tidak ada jika kita bersama Tuhan’! Oleh sebab itu jangan tawar hati (Ef. 3:13) lalu berhenti melayani Tuhan hanya karena banyaknya persoalan; sebaliknya, atasi masalah tersebut bersama Dia yang memberikan kita kekuatan dan kemampuan.

Remember, no matter how difficult our work is due to the numerous enemies, God is walking before us and is fighting for us (Deuteronomy 1: 30).  And we can face and overcome difficulties with Him. But it does not mean that ‘ with God there will be no problems.’ Therefore, we should not get fainthearted (Ephesians 3:13) and then quit our ministry when overwhelmed with lots of trouble. Rather, let us face the problems along with Him that gives us strength and ability.

Introspeksi: apakah kesesakan karena masalah bertubi-tubi membuat kita lemah kemudian tidak berdoa dan tidak beribadah? Ilustrasi: dalam kondisi lemah/sakit, tubuh kita sendiri yang bermasalah sehingga masakan lezat pun terasa tidak enak. Bila kondisi rohani kita lemah, jangan menyalahkan orang lain terlebih menyalahkan ‘makanan’ Firman Tuhan!

Do never-ending difficulties make us so weak that we stop praying and skip church services? As an illustration, if we get sick, even the most expensive and delicious food will be tasteless. The problem is us not others. Likewise, if we feel spiritually weak, do not blame / point the finger at others or the ”food” -- the Word of God.

·       Allah menghendaki agar gereja menjadi wujud nyata dari pekerjaan baik Allah dengan menyatakan rahasia yang telah berabad-abad tersembunyi itulah pelbagai ragam hikmat Allah kepada pemerintah dan penguasa di Surga (Ef. 3:9-10).Dengan kata lain, gereja menjadi manusia baru (Ef. 4:1-3,13,17-19,25-26,31) dan anak terang (Ef. 5:1-2) dengan menerapkan pelbagai macam hikmat Allah yang ada dalam pribadi Kristus. Misal: gereja memiliki kuasa, kekudusan, suka berdamai dll. seperti yang terdapat dalam pribadi Kristus. Bila di dalam Yesus tidak ada kebencian, gereja juga tidak menyimpan kebencian apalagi dipelihara menjadi dendam. 

·       God wants the church to materialize the good work of God by revealing the secrets hidden for centuries, namely the various facets of God’s wisdom to the goverment and the rulers in the air. (Ephesians 3:9-10). In other words, church must become a new creation (Ephesians 4:1-3,13,17-19,25-26,31) and the children of light (Ephesians 5:1-2) by implementing the multy-faceted wisdom of God in the personality of Christ. That’s why the church should have the characters of Jesus., like authority, sanctification, peace-loving attitude, etc. In Jesus there is no hate. In the same way, the church must not harbor hate, let alone nourish it into grudge.

Heran, para malaikat menjadi tahu rahasia yang terkandung dalam berita Injil ketika gereja yang dibangun oleh Allah di dalam Kristus tampil (1 Ptr. 1:12).

Wonderfully, the angels know the secret within the gospel when the church that is built by God in Christ is revealed (1  Peter 1:12)

Lebih lanjut, gereja memiliki keberanian untuk bersaksi (Ef. 3:11-12) merefleksikan kehebatan-kehebatan Allah di dalam kehidupan kita antara lain: keagungan-Nya dalam menciptakan manusia, kehidupan kita di dalam Tuhan dsb. sehingga orang (yang masih hidup dalam kegelapan dosa) datang berbondong-bondong melihat terang dan kemuliaan Tuhan di dalam kita (Yes. 60).

Furthermore, the Church should have the courage to testify (Ephesians 3 :11-12) and to reflect the magnificent works of God in our lives so that crowds of people (who are still living in darkness) may come and see the light and the glory of our God in our life-styles (Isaiah 60).

Aplikasi: kita yang telah mengalami keubahan hidup menjadi terang untuk memberitakan seluruh ragam hikmat Allah kepada mereka yang masih hidup dalam kegelapan dosa.

Having been transformed, we should impart the enormous richness of God’s wisdom to those who are still in darkness.

Meskipun menderita dipenjara demi Tuhan, Rasul Paulus masih bersemangat menasihati agar gereja hidup berpadanan dengan panggilan mereka (Ef. 4:1) artinya, panggilan Allah harus dijawab melalui pertobatan kemudian diimplementasikan dengan hidup baru, kudus, rendah hati, lemah lembut, sabar, penuh kasih dalam saling membantu (Ef. 4:2).Kekristenan harus dipraktikkan dalam keseharian hidup agar dapat disaksikan oleh orang di sekitar kita.

Although in jail for the sake of God, the Apostle Paul enthusiastically encouraged the Church to always live according to their calling ( Ephesians 4:1). It means, our response to God’s calling should be shown / demonstrated in our repentance and our new way of life: holiness, humility, gentleness, patience and love in helping each other (Ephesians 4:2). Christianity should be practiced in our daily lives so that people around us can see it.

 

Aplikasi: rendah hati dan lemah lembut dapat terwujud bila kita mampu mengelola perbedaan. Perlu disadari dahsyatnya Gereja yaitu menentukan masa depan dunia; kalau gereja diangkat dari bumi, ‘selesailah’ dunia. Bahkan masa depan setan pun di tangan gereja serta masa depan manusia. Hal ini akan terjadi bila gereja memerintah bersama Kristus sejak Kerajaan seribu tahun hingga kekekalan (Why. 20 s/d Why 21:1).

Humility and understanding can take shape if we can manage our differences. It is noteworthy that the Church plays a tremendous role in determining the future of this world. Right after the rapture, comes the end of the world.  Even the future of satan and that of mankind are in the hands of the Church. This will happen when the Church rules with Christ in the millennial kingdom from eternity to eternity (Revelation 20 – 21:1).

Hendaknya gereja dapat mengelola hikmat Allah dengan baik sampai mencapai kesatuan iman, pengetahuan yang benar tentang Anak Allah dan tumbuh dewasa sesuai dengan kepenuhan Kristus supaya tidak mudah diombang-ambingkan rupa-rupa angin pengajaran yang menyesatkan (Ef. 4:13-14). Singkatnya, gereja Tuhan harus dewasa (sesuai yang diinginkan Allah) dalam berpikir, berkomunikasi, juga mampu mengelola emosi dan hawa nafsu.

The church should apply the wisdom of God to reach unity in the faith, and in the knowledge of the Son of God to mature to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. That way, we will not be tossed about by all kinds of winds of misleading doctrines (Ephesians 4: 13-14). In short, the Church of God must know how to think, socialize and cope with emotions as well as passions in a mature manner according to God’s will.

Waspada, fenomena datang deras melanda kekristenan melalui politikuntuk menggoncang iman gereja. Hal itu dapat dipelajari dari sejarah bangsa Israel keluar dari Mesir harus dengan tangan Allah yang kuat sebab Firaun telah menggiring masalah Israel ke ranah politik dan menjadikannya masalah nasional (Kel. 1:8-22). Kalau pekerjaan Tuhan dibawa ke ranah politik dan menjadi masalah nasional (dunia), kekuatan manusia siapa pun tak berarti kecuali Tuhan yang dapat menolong. Itu sebabnya kita harus menjadi anak-anak Tuhan, penurut-penurut Allah (Ef. 5:1).

Beware of political views attacking Christianity to shake the faith of churches. We can learn about this from the history of Israel’s exodus from Egypt, where the hands of God had to intervene and help the Israelites, for  Pharaoh had shifted the Israel’s issue into the political agenda and, therefore, became a national issue                 (Exodus 1:8-22). If the work of God is switched  to the political arena and becomes a national or international issue, no man’s power but God Himself knows how to handle the case. Therefore, make sure that we are the children of God who follow His will in full obedience. (Ephesians 5:1).

Sekarang kita mengerti betapa agung/besar karya penciptaan Allah atas gereja yang telah dipersiapkan sebelumnya untuk menampilkan pelbagai ragam hikmat-Nya agar mereka yang hidup dalam kegelapan dosa dapat menyaksikan terang Firman-Nya dan beroleh keselamatan untuk satu kali kelak hidup bersama Dia di Surga yang telah disiapkan oleh-Nya maka kitapatutbangga serta bersukacita menjadiumatKristen Tubuh Kristus, Mempelai Anak Domba. Amin.

Now we can see the greatness of His workmanship on the Church, prepared beforehand to reveal the multiple facets of God’s wisdom. That way, those living in darkness can witness the light of His Word and receive salvation. Someday, they will be with Him in heaven – a place that He has prepared for them.  Much to our delight, we will be proud to be Christians, making up the Body of Christ, the Bridegroom and the Lamb. A m e n.
